The parts that are needed to go wireless:

1. wireless dongle carrier… available at new micros (http://newmicros.com/)

2. 2 Series 1 (series 2 for some reason has a ridic. impossible protocol to work with) XBee modules… I chose the chip antenna just because I am thinking of the comfort of a wearable garment, but you are free to purchase either of these:

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8664

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8665

—————

Step 1.

Download the FTDI Driver software (available when you goto newmircos.com — click on usb xbee dongle— scroll down to section that says “usb drivers” — click on “download direct from FTDI” and choose appropriate driver to match computer).

Step 2.

Plug in your dongle to a usb port on your computer.

Step 3.

Open Terminal and type in:

ls /dev/tty.* (for Mac OS X)

ls /dev/tty* (for Linux)

Then press “Enter” key.

Step 4:

You will see a list of all your available serial ports. Choose the one that has the xbee on it. and type in

screen portname datarate. (ie. screen dev/tty/serialportA7007-pga 9600)

Press “Enter” key.

Step 5.

Now you are ready to set the XBee’s destination address. Type in “+++” to go into command mode. You should see Terminal say “OK”

Step 6.

This gets tricky. When you are typing, it will not show on the screen, so make sure the following commands are printed exactly as stated with capital letters by holding down the shift key.

For module 1, type in the following:

ATMY 1234 (<— this is stating its status as sender)

Press “Enter” (you should see the screen say ok)

ATDL 5678 (<— and saying it should receive from a module whose ATMY is this destination address)

Press “Enter” (screen says ok)

ATID 1111WR (<—this can be any ID name… we default to 1111, but you can also default to toy1, or garment1, whatever of your liking. This is just set to the parameters of communication.)

Press “Enter”

“Ctrl-A” “Ctrl-\” to quit out of command mode.

step 7.

This takes you out of command mode. To check if these values were saved press “Enter” again, and then back into command mode by pressing: “+++”.

Now type in ATMY, “Enter” to see the value it holds onto the module.

Continue checking with this manner. (ATDL, “Enter”, ATID, “Enter”)

Ctrl-a Ctrl-\ to exit out of the command mode.

For module 2, continue the same steps.

Step 8.

Take out module 1 insert module 2 onto the dongle.

Step 9.

Open terminal, type in:

ls /dev/tty.* (for Mac OS X)

ls /dev/tty* (for Linux)

and then press “Enter”

Step 10.

You will see a list of all your available serial ports. Choose the one that has the XBee on it. and type in

screen portname datarate. (ie. screen dev/tty/serialportA7007-pga 9600)

Press “Enter”.

Step 11.

You are now in port terminal… type in “+++” and press “Enter”.

step 12.

For module 2, type the following:

ATMY 5678 (<— this is stating its status as receiver)

Press “Enter” (you should see the screen say ok)

ATDL 1234 (<— from its sender)

Press “Enter” (screen says ok)

ATID 1111WR (<—completing the ID communication for module 1 and 2 to speak to one another.)

Press “Enter”

“Ctrl-A” “Ctrl-\” to quit out of command mode.

step 13.

Check to see if module 2 values were saved.

Press “Enter” again, and then back into command mode by pressing: “+++”.

Now type in ATMY, “Enter” to see the value it holds onto the module.

Continue checking with this manner. (ATDL, “Enter”, ATID, “Enter”)

Ctrl-a Ctrl-\ to exit out of the command mode.

Step 14.

Close Terminal. Done!

When troubleshooting, also be sure to set ATDH to 0.

*** If you want XBee modules to communicate to more than one port, repeat the same process, but change the module ids to “2222″ or another id name of your liking.

• Name the steps that you performed/will perform in the Vienna opera ball.

There were a number of “unconventional” aka non-syllabus steps, like
many performance pieces.
- basic skate steps in shadow position: forward skates, zig-zag skates
- open right turns in shadow position
- forward steps with spins out and in
- forward steps with rightward position changes
- basic polka progressives
- basic left turns
- basic box steps
- hesitation steps
- hesitation with cantor step
- basic right turns
- basic right turn with underarm turn to right
- cut time steps
- open right turns
- open fleckerels
- lady’s underarm turn to right from open position

Natural Turn – Reverse turn – Cantor step – hand-to-hand – closed change step – underarm turn – inside turn – turns in shadow position – grapevine – polka basic step

• What are the three basic steps that you enjoy? (i.e. right turn, box
step, etc…)

1. backwards box steps
2. left turns
3. lady’s underarm turn into open fan
(what was the pool of basic steps we could choose from?)

Reverse Turns, underarm turns, hand to hands

• As a man, how do you decide when to change into a different step?
What are the difficulties you face when you lead? And as a woman, how
easy or hard is it to follow? For both: Is it intuitive? Or was it
predetermined?

Mostly intuitive taking into heavy account my constant read of the
dance floor and all couples on it. Floorcraft is a skill developed
over time: how to anticipate where the other couples may go but also
reacting and changing leads within fractions of a second. Priority is
on safety of my partner and I. That all has become almost second
nature so I just dance and read and dance and read. I try to enjoy
myself and make sure my partner is enjoying her/himself, too.

For a woman, it gets easier to follow as your skill level increases, so much of the steps get into muscle memory. We have to do it backwards and in heels! It is even easier if you know your partner and can predict and/or sense the subtle nuances in the leader’s lead. The dance becomes intuitive if I know that the leader will be dance basic steps. If there is a choreographed routine, then the steps are predetermined, but there is still a level of muscle memory and intuition that is required to make sure that both dancers are in sync with the music and each other.

• In a ballroom, how long does it take, approximately, to circle the
entire dance floor? How many different steps did you take?

About 20 seconds, with all progressive steps. Thats about 30 basic
steps of 3 beats each.

It really depends on the size of the dance floor, the size of the steps that the dancers take. In most basic steps (eg. Reverse and natural turns) there are 3 steps each, to the count of 1-2-3, 1-2-3.

• It is said the Viennese waltz is beautiful to watch, but even more
beautiful to dance. Are there any points in the dance, when you as a
dancer feel that a strong sensation or emotion is evoked that may go
unnoticed to the audience?

The feeling of sliding along the dance fllor smoothly and gracefully.
Its something you can only appreciate as someone in the dance. You
enjoy the ride, and the feeling that youre not alone in it sharing it
with your partner. Sometimes to the point of being in your own world,
isolating yourselves from reality and only noticing the shapes and
paths unfold.

Whenever I dance V-waltz, I try to express the emotions of the music as much as possible, so that the audience can feel it too. Sometimes a v-waltz has a happy tone, such as the waltzes of old world Vienna. Other times they are darker and mysterious, such as “Vito’s Waltz” from the Godfather movies. The only sensations that may go unnoticed (hopefully) is my embarrassment if I mess up!

1. I started off with the following materials to build the soft circuit switch: two strips of Conductive fabric, two pieces of felt, and shoulder pad with a hole cut in the center.

2. Using fabric glue, I connected the two strips of fabric to felt.

3. Using fabric glue once more, I attached the felt onto the area of the shoulder pad that had the donut hole. The switch essentially activates when the two pieces of fabric touch.

4. The finishing touch was to seal it.

5. Then I sewed it onto a shirt, and connected the ends of the conductive fabric that were loose to 30 gauge wrap wire that I just poked through and twisted to seal. The ends of the wrap wire were then connected to header pins so that they could connect to my breadboard.

6. Test results:
