precedents & artist inspirations
1. Cage and Cunningham on their discussion of “the everyday” as a celebration.
2. Futurist Manifesto. Written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, an Italian poet, in 1909, nearly a decade before the birth of modern dance in Germany. I enjoyed the ideas of relinquishing the old and finding beauty in the new.
3. Judson Church Group. Thank you for breaking the boundaries of modern dance.
4. Contact Improv Dance Study for their discussion on the elements of finding liberation, and constraints, in modern dance. I specifically enjoyed their process of editing and interpreting. I realized that in my idealized world, the choreographers job is simply to edit, and the freedom for dialogue and movement is given to the dancers.
5. Apparation because it fits MOST like my project in that dancers are given the freedom to change screens and sound. It allows the performance to be interactive.
6. The Peony Pavilion in that it also reads gestures and interprets them as sound through dance. I especially like their link to a cultural identity.
7. Pulse Park. I am completely amazed by the cleverness/quirkiness behind the use of light/screen display and sensors. Basically using a heart rate sensor, a light display appears in pulse park. GENIUS, GENIUS.
8. Stephen Vitellio’s Four Color Sound for his exceptional use of creating a sound environment with the uses of color. I also am brainstorming a color-changing screen.
9. Yelle-for her use of colored screens and vibrant costumes. I feel I would like to use this aesthetic in the design of my wearable. The lyrics are quite vulgar, at times even feminist friendly.
10. MIA. Brilliant costumes. Brilliant lyrics. Same story as Yelle.
11. Martha Graham. The mother of modern dance. I especially enjoy her celebration of the dancer in dance and not the choreographer. This is much like the idea of interactivity, where one celebrates the audience, and not so much the artist. Ideas such as hers are what pave the way for art today.
12. Interview with Benoît Maubrey. In Audio Clothes and Uniforms. His presentation on how he came to the idea, which was to take a stroll in Berlin and found inspiration, is a great statement for finding the postmodern beauty in the world, which is to connect art to the everyday.
13. Interview with Ritta Ikonen Today I exploded an egg in the microwave. Next, I want to make an egg costume. I loved this interview because of how she gets inspired by her everyday experiences.
14. XY Interaction for their use of sound with touch and gesture, and most especially their process of incorporating textiles. This is also similar to the idea of a screen reacting and reading gestures, which helps me visualize and explain my process better in comparison.
15. Kota Yamazaki’s idea behind Fluid hug-hug. Her thoughts on how life is fluid, and is a process of constant growth is inspiration enough for my thesis process.
